American gangsters became especially popular during the early 1900's, (The Gangster Era) when Al Capone, Bugsy Siegel, Lucky Luciano, Machine Gun Kelly, John Dillinger and many other gangsters were leaving a trail of kidnappings, robberies and murder behind them in major U.S cities such as Chicago and New York. The pubblic couldn't get enough of these criminals and was fascinated with their stories which seemed to appear in the newspaper on a daily basis. One of the most famous incidents was the execution-style murder spree known as St. Valentine's Day Massacre which took place in Chicago on February 14, 1929. During this time Hollywood released a flurry of gangster themed films, insprired by current events such as G-men, Scarface, Gun Crazy and Little Caesar. More recently muvies like The Godfather and tv shows like the Sopranos have brought back the popularity of the gangster.
