1000 Islands ...
Getting There
The 1000 Islands region is located along the northwestern border between
New York State and Canada, at the headwaters of The St. Lawrence River. The
closest major airport is in Syracuse, New York. Anyone traveling by plane
would have to rent a car at the airport and drive 1 1/2 hours north on Interstate
Route 81.
Public transportation in the region does not really exist aside from small
ferryboats that can take you back and forth (with your car) from Cape Vincent,
NY to Wolf Island, Ontario and from Wolf Island to Kingston, Ontario. The
Wolf Island ferries are a fun ride and worth the time for taking one leg of
the ride to Kingston. Use the 1000 Islands Bridge for the other leg of the
trip.
To reach tourist attractions like Boldt Castle or Singer Castle (without
your own motor boat) requires using a tour boat shuttle or going on a longer
tour that stops at one of the castles.
In general, a car is definitely required to visit the 1000 Islands.
