Highlands ...
When to Go
Highlands North Carolina, for most travelers and vacation-home owners is
largely a summer and fall destination. Summer is very active due in part to
the cooler temperatures of the mountains when compared to the surrounding
lowlands to the east and south. However, the many options for outdoor activities
are the big summer draw to Highlands. Those activities don't stop when fall
arrives and the mountains blaze with fall colors.
Fall is definitely beautiful in the Highlands area, especially for those who live further south where seasons are not so visible. It does tend to be a rainy time in Highlands and despite the southern location, can get quite chilly.
To avoid the largest number of tourists but still have a good shot at warm weather for outdoor activities, September is a good choice.
